Angela Rayner’s workers’ rights reforms to cost taxpayers almost £1bn, say Tories
Labour’s workers’ rights reforms will cost taxpayers almost £1 billion a year, analysis by the Conservatives has found. Angela Rayner has championed the package, which includes handing staff rights to more generous sick pay, parental leave and protection from dismissal. Under the plans, which are being fast-tracked through Parliament, workers will have the right to take their employer to a tribunal from their first day of employment. Ministers have faced a backlash from businesses over the changes and the Government’s own impact assessment admits they will cost all employers, including private businesses, public sector bodies and charities, £4.5 billion a year. The Tory analysis found almost £1 billion of that amount will fall on the public sector, at a time when Rachel Reeves is struggling to meet her own fiscal rules. The amount is twice as much as the inheritance tax raid on family farms will raise annually and more than two-thirds of what will be brought in by restricting the winter fuel payment.
